Parramatta Metro Station Community Open Day - Inside the Station Box and Archaeological Findings
On 21 April 2024, the Parramatta Metro Station construction site opened its doors to the public.
And in this video, you'll see the station box being excavated. It's currently 15 metres deep, and we were able to go right down into this station box, and see the excavation work happening up close.
Dan Powrie, Project Director for Sydney Metro West was my guide, an being a Civil Engineer, we got to really geek out on the construction of this station.
The Diaphragm wall that surrounds the station box is now complete, along with a number of temporary steel beams to keep these walls in place.
Dan reveals where the two station entrances will be. We also talk about how the Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) are progressing.
I ask Dan a few questions about Sydney Metro West including the electrification system that will be used, train headways, and train lengths.
And then I talk to Dr Amanda Dusting, about the Archaeological finds, and show you some of the artefacts that were recently discovered.

Accuracy
I do my best to make the commentary in these videos as accurate as possible by checking facts on the internet and other sources. However, sometimes the information isn't available, so I'll use my railway knowledge and insight to explain something to the best of my ability. If accuracy is important, do check the comments, as other viewers will often pick up on things I've missed or any mistakes made. Also note that for older videos, things may change over time, causing some of the information to become out of date.
Construction Sites, Maintenance Facilities and other Private Property
All footage of construction sites, maintenance facilities and other private property is taken from a public vantage point. The only exception is if it's an open day or I have special permission to access the site. The iPhone's small lens and zoom function makes it easier to film through small gaps in hoardings or fencing, so it may look like I'm on site when I'm not! If you would like to know the exact filming location, then ask me in the comments.

    Thanks, Paul. Great video. My memory of Ocean View station is that it would be adjacent to the opening off the highway at the end of the Armco railing that can be seen after the drop down off the overbridge. The station was very close to the road, and slightly above it. There appears to be no signs of it now. When I was teaching in Bowral in the 1960s, a friend of mine who taught at a small school near Robertson, had arranged for us to ride in the cab of a freight train down to Unanderra. I missed the train at Robertson because of the trip out from Bowral, but my friend went anyhow. I scurried out to Ocean View, parked the car in the paspalum at the side of the road near the station, just in time to find the train coming around the bend under the overbridge. I climbed up into the cab of the diesel through the front door. The crew were kind enough to pull the train up for me. To keep the story short - we rode in the cab of one 44 class diesel to Summit Tank, changed to another 44 that was attached to the front of the train, having just come up as a helper from Unanderra on another train, swapped over at Unanderra into another 44 helping at the front of a freight train going back up the hill. We changed to the second 44 at Summit Tank and the helper diesel detached to help another train down to Unanderra. So we rode in four different locos, and met four sets of crew, who were all friendly and helpful with information.

    Should we make the Public Transport Cheaper. We should make it 25 cents 1 way and 1 back. It will help. When you go to places and go back home later in the day, The Cost is 50 cents per day. 50 cents x 7 days = $3.50 cents. 50 cents x 31 = $15 dollars and 50 cents. and 50 cents x 365 days = $182.50 cents 182 dollars and 50 cents. Cheaper than a car that cost $30,000 Dollars a Year. We should make the price 25 cents one way and 25 cents back with 50 cents. It will help increase the Frequency of Public Transport Services, Reducing Traffic, and Roads being Quieter. That will be a Good Idea.

    In China, the metro construction usually uses a gantry crane to lift the TBM components into the tunnel for assembly, I wonder if wheeled cranes are used over here?

    • @TransportVlog
      @TransportVlog 4 дні тому

      Hi Yitao, Yes gantry cranes were certainly used at both Chatswood and Sydenham. There is now a large acoustic shed at The Bays site, and that may well house the gantry crane.

    Just found your video, brought back many memories of the late '60s and early '70s. Worked freight trains from Port Kembla North to Moss Vale, Medway Quarry and Goulburn as a guard. I remember doing safe working duties at Summit Tank signal box when the line was Electric staff, detaching and dispatching bank engines from both front (840 ton loads, train #s 821, 829 and 835 for Goulburn destination ) and rear (1200 ton loads of steel, #s 801,803 and 807) for Dynon destinations. All long before the current platform, behind which many years ago was the turn table for the steam locos, mainly 50 class I believe. I remember it could be a cold, damp and miserable place on a winter's foggy night.

    As I’m seeing updates of the stations while I’m heading to work or around the Brisbane CBD City, I see exciting news from the Cross River Rail website and new stations (Channels 7, 9, Ten, and ABC News). 1. The upgrade works in the Roma Street station subway is nearly completed with the finishing works. 2. The lifts, escalators, platform-screen doors, stairs, block works, building frames, the canopy roofs, and timetable screens are all being installed into place. 3. The new Exhibition station is nearly finished with the canopy roofs installed, the stairs, the new side track bridge, and fit-out electric wires are going into place. 4. Albert Street station is about to head to ground level around July and August while the lifts and escalators are both in place. 5. The Southern Portal from Boggo Road is about to be nearly finished with fit-out electric wires and lights installed. 6. Dutton Park station is taking shape with the overpass walkway installed from December 2023 and the lifts are in place. As 2024 is flying before the world heads towards 2025, I can’t wait for more updates and The Cross River Rail going to put the trains for testing like the Brisbane Metro buses.
